Top 10 Tech Prank

Top 10 Tech Prank
Help colleagues get closer with these practical IT jokes

Pranks are awesome. They are one of the few things in life that most people can agree on being disproportionately great (except if you're Microsoft). Prank Cats are in the same league with videos, candy and free stuff - everyone loves them. (Except for the one man you know, but he's still overcome with your last prank. Mild, Joe!)

You have probably already prepared some lucky members of your life at one time or another. You may have deployed a polite whooping cushion or used a vacuum when someone is asleep. Fun time, but are you really living up to your prankster potential? You're a tech-savvy person, and it's time your prank showed up. We have found some solutions…

Note: This feature was originally published on 03/28/2016. We've bumped it up because a good lighthouse prank can build better teams and help allies grow closer, destroy obstacles and dramatically improve morale.

1. Turn the computer display screen upside down

4

This little prank using your trackpad makes you feel like you're on Twitter while you're working or want to climb Everest (or something else is equally difficult).

For Windows: Hit Ctrl + Alt + Down Arrow (the same combination with Up Arrow will flip it back). If for some reason this does not work, right click Desktop> Display Settings (or screen resolution on older versions) and change the screen orientation.

For Mac: Hold Command + Option at the same time, while still holding those keys and go to System Preferences. Go to the display (still holding the two keys) a new menu should appear called Rotation, and you can flip the display and undo it.

2. Move people to madness by constantly changing the mouse pointer to look busy

4

This simple prank will force your victim to think that their computer is hanging all the time when it is not really there. Whenever I see a busy cursor I feel irritable. It can't be helped. The mere thought of this prank happening to me makes me want to punch something. But, if you promise me to never use it here, then the instructions are:

For Windows: Go to Control Panel> Mouse> Pointers and change the Normal Pointer to Working.

For Mac: This prank option is not readily available, but you can still mess with the cursor. Go to System Preferences> Accessibility> Display and drag the cursor size to the right to make the mouse pointer larger. While you're at it, you can mess around with other display settings such as deactivating colors and turning all kinds of contrast.

3. Become a master of sinful unbridled additions

4

This simple but highly disappointing prank can be played in many ways and depending on your victim you can play with his computer or smartphone. The basic premise here is to add a custom entry to the AutoCorrect keyboard feature to replace a common word (or spacebar) with something else entirely.

You can be subtle and just replace a correctly typed word with a typo. This is disturbing, right. Or you can go for the shock value and add something that makes you laugh uncontrollably - like "Hi" to "I like to see Jersey Shore reruns." Just be prepared to deal with whatever the consequences may be.

For Microsoft Word: Choose File from the Main Menu (or Office Button in earlier versions of Word)> Options> Proofing> Autocomplete Options. If you want it to be system-wide, you can use AutoHotkey instead.

4

Word on Mac: Word> Preferences> Autocomplete.

For Mac: System Preferences> Keyboard> Text> Click on the plus sign at the bottom left.

For Google Docs: Tools> Preferences. Add away Make sure the box next to "Automatic Replacement" is checked.

4

For Android: Go to Settings> Language and input> Google keyboard (or other default keyboard)> Text correction> Personal dictionary.

For iPhone: Go to Settings> General> Keyboard (make sure autocomplete is on)> Text Replacement> Tap on the plus sign at the top right and add your "fixes".

4. Switch the keyboard layout to DVORAK

4

As a quick alternative, this is a fun way to mess with someone without doing much. All you need to do is enable the Dvorak optional keyboard layout, which most average users are not familiar with.

Go to Control Panel> Region and Language> Keyboard> Change Keyboard, then click the Add button and choose the Dvorak layout (or any other random layout you want). When you have done this, use the drop-down above to set the default. You probably want to turn on the Language bar tab and set it and it can be hidden as well, so the trick cannot be easily detected.

5. Pose
